PLAY-AND-LEARN
Facilitated Parent/Toddler Playgroup: Six-Week Series
This playgroup focuses on teaching budding social skills and building community with other toddler parents or caregiver. 14 mo to 30mo with ECM’s Director, Rebecca Walsh. Rebecca has over twenty years’ experience in early childhood education. More on Rebecca’s background here.
Rebecca will lead this facilitated parent/toddler playgroups. These weekly playgroups allow children to make meaningful connections and develop early social skills as they interact with the same group of children over time, in a structured "preschool warm-up" environment.
Play-and-Learn groups also offer a very unique opportunity for parents to observe the instructor putting child development theory into action! During the course of the Play-and-Learn group, tricky toddler behaviors emerge and parents are able to see how the teacher handles the behavior - giving parents new language and strategies to use at home.
Each weekly session includes circle time (facilitated songs/games with the instructor), quiet observation of the children playing, parent observation of the instructor modeling interactions with the children, snack time (brought from home), and carefully selected weekly readings and discussions on important toddler topics like fostering social skills, navigating no's, tantrums, and more. Time is allotted each week to answer individual questions and concerns around these topics.
Each session is nine weeks long. Please note that many families will sign up for several consecutive sessions, which allows both parents and children to fully immerse themselves in this routine/philosophy and gain the most benefits from the experience. These classes ideally are taken in sequence for up to 1-2 years before a child enters preschool.
Groups are limited to 8 children/caregivers. No drop-ins.
* It is recommended that your child be walking before beginning the group, so that there is not a mix of crawlers and walkers in the same space. Also, the age of the group may shift a little bit due to interest of participants so do let us know if you are interested.
Please email Charlotte at 07hsuan@gmail.com if you are interested in joining a group in your building (Arden).
TODDLER PARENTING CLASSES
PARENTING THROUGH THE TODDLER YEARS: INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP
Workshop for parents/caregivers with children 12-36 months
The first three years of life are when your child's most dramatic brain development occurs. During these early years, parents have the profound opportunity to nurture their child’s cognitive, social, and emotional development through connected, responsive parenting. This workshop seeks to support parents of toddlers by offering a glimpse into their child's rapidly developing brain, an overview of typical developmental milestones, and guidelines for setting developmentally appropriate expectations (“When is my son old enough to know how to share his toys?” “Why does my daughter run away when I tell her to sit down?”). We will practice evidence-based positive discipline strategies to navigate challenging toddler behaviors and set appropriate limits, while maintaining a strong connection with your child through the toddler years.
This workshop leads to an in-depth, five-week Parenting Through the Toddler Years series.
Weekly topics include:
Toddler sleep (night weaning, nap regressions, nightmares, transitioning to a toddler bed)
Potty training (when/how to begin, no-pressure strategies, and language/techniques to engage toddlers) - also available a la care here
Positive discipline strategies for challenging toddler behaviors like tantrums, refusing to cooperate, hitting, biting and more.
Preventative strategies to reduce challenging behaviors, including floor time, routines and rituals, and self-care for parents
Sensory and art activities (great alternatives to screen time) that will help to focus over- excited toddlers, create calming effects and help organize your child’s developing brain.
